Summary[edit]

Description
English: Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla. (Sept. 14, 2004) – Students assigned to Naval Aviation Technical Training Center (NATTC) place sand bags in front of their barrack’s main entrance as they prepare to evacuate Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola in preparation of Hurricane Ivan. The students will be taken to sixteen area shelters to assist local civilians with the approaching hurricane. Ivan, an extremely dangerous category four hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane scale, has maximum sustained winds near 140 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 105 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 260 miles. The well-defined eye of hurricane Ivan was located about 180 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. Hurricane Ivan has killed at least 68 people in the Caribbean and it now poses a threat to the Florida panhandle and the Gulf Coast States. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer’s Mate 2nd Class Mark A.
